Report from Fortune Brainstorm Green
Posted 04/19/10

Historically business leaders and environmental activists most often found themselves pointing fingers at one another and rarely meeting except perhaps in a court of law or a contentious Congressional hearing. But the third annual Fortune Brainstorm Green conference had the feel of a high school reunion where the star athletes and cheerleading captains (in this setting, major corporate CEOs and capitalistic entrepreneurs) are now happily walking the halls with the class nerds (the tree huggers and animal lovers.)

Building a Sustainable Haiti
Posted 02/01/10

From Capitol Hill to the blogosphere, people are talking about how best to rebuild Haiti. This past week, Senator John Kerry convened a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to question experts on the best path forward. While both Senators and witnesses were appropriately hesitant to talk about the current tragic state of affairs as an “opportunity,” the consensus was clear. The recent earthquake and resulting devastation opens the door to rethink U.S. and international policy towards the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Mixed Bag Messaging
Posted 01/11/10

If the first ten days of 2010 are any indication, those facing voters this November will be challenged in how they talk about the economic landscape.  For every bit of gloomy economic news, there seems to be a ray of hope.

Recess Reflections
Posted 12/30/09

No question that Washington is a factory town, judging by the lackluster morning rush hour when Congress is in recess.  After a blistering several weeks of debate on health care, Members finally called it quits for the year after a rare Christmas Eve vote.  The sidewalks in D.C. are basically rolled up, which means it is the perfect time for reflecting on what’s in and what’s out.

No One Paid for this Post
Posted 11/02/09

This weekend I bought a book of brief essays called "This I Believe," based on an NPR project that invites people to share the core beliefs that shape our daily lives, which itself is based on an Edward R. Murrow radio show from the 1950s.  Before I start reading the book, I wanted to give thought to the core beliefs that shape my daily life.

America’s Best Idea
Posted 09/28/09

It's been impossible to miss all the recent promotion about Ken Burn's new PBS documentary, "The National Parks:  America' Best Idea."  I'm particularly attracted to the use of the phrase "Best Idea" in the title.  Are the National Parks our best idea?  If not, what is?

Share Your Strength

Most of us at VOX Global arrive each morning with strong bodies and minds ready to get to work having enjoyed a nutritious breakfast or at least a muffin from the coffee shop on the way in. But sadly, millions of kids start each school day on an empty stomach. The numbers and stats can be overwhelming, but you can help.

Czarmania

Cybersecurity Czar. Climate and Energy Czar. US-Mexico Border Czar. Urban Affairs Czar. Bank Bailout Czar.  The list of new titles created within the White House “Executive Office of the President” goes on, and reportedly numbers near 20 now.   The trend has lots of Washington insiders and poli-sci academia-types talking up a storm.

Picturing Culture
Posted 04/24/09

Everyone knows the familiar expression, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”  Recently I came across an image that captures the essence of the culture at my firm, VOX Global. The artist is Maira Kalman, who may be familiar to readers of the New Yorker as her work is frequently featured on their covers.  She also illustrated a beautiful 2005 edition of “The Elements of Style, ” commonly referred to as Strunk and White.

Racing to Twitter
Posted 04/17/09

As Twitter CEO Evan Williams prepares to go on Oprah today with Twitter phenom Ashton Kutcher, my VOX colleagues have been furiously debating the value, power, and practically of the tool for use in public affairs and reputation management campaigns.  Personally, the best use of the tool I’ve seen so far is by Lance Armstrong.
