How can organizations effectively create long-term, sustainable social impact? It’s a question that many organizations are grappling with.

In an attempt to answer this question, Boston College professors and leading thinkers in the social impact movement, Mary Cronin and Tiziana Dearing, brought together an array of leaders from the nonprofit, corporate, public, investor and community activist sectors to contribute their perspectives.

The book, “Managing for Social Impact: Innovations in Responsible Enterprise,” concludes that true social impact requires, “active management, cross-sector collaboration, social innovation and a shared framework for engaging stakeholders and measuring impact across multiple sectors (pg. vii).”

In our chapter, we investigate various sustainability reporting frameworks that organizations can use to better measure impact. We explore frameworks including the Global Reporting Initiative, Sustainable Accounting Standards Board, UN Global Compact and Sustainable Development Goals, as well as emerging tools in impact measurement.
