Finding the AI Advantage in Sustainability

By: James Baril, Senior Partner, Head of AI and Innovation and Kevin Maley, Senior Vice President

AI is everywhere right now, including in sustainability. The real question for most organizations is whether it is making teams more effective or simply adding complexity.

Sustainability professionals are already navigating expanding disclosure expectations, evolving regulations and heightened stakeholder scrutiny. AI is now reshaping how information is analyzed, shared and understood.

The organizations pulling ahead are not treating AI as a separate initiative. They are integrating it into how work actually gets done.

That is the thinking behind VOX SustainAI, our AI-enabled approach to enhancing sustainability strategy, reporting and communications. At its core is a simple belief: technology should amplify expertise, not replace it.

How AI Is Creating Value in Sustainability

In practice, we are deploying AI across multiple dimensions of sustainability work. A few examples include:

  1. Optimizing Sustainability Content for AI Uptake. We analyze clients’ communications footprints across digital channels to identify opportunities to strengthen visibility through Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO. This involves structuring external content so it is more likely to be surfaced, interpreted and referenced by the generative AI systems that increasingly shape how investors, policymakers and customers access information.

We have worked with organizations across industries to refine language and positioning based on these insights, helping ensure their content is both discoverable and resonant with key audiences.

  1. Transforming Data Analysis into Competitive Insight. AI tools allow us to process large volumes of sustainability data more efficiently and conduct faster, more precise gap assessments that help organizations understand where they stand and where they can lead.

For one client, we used AI to analyze a large volume of investor and analyst reports, RFPs and rater and ranker methodologies to understand how sustainability performance is evaluated across audiences. This helped us identify gaps, highlight competitive strengths and align both strategy and communications with how the market defines leadership.

  1. Streamlining Sustainability Reporting from Draft to Disclosure. We enhance the drafting process, benchmark disclosures against leading frameworks and strengthen regulatory alignment.

In a recent engagement, we applied AI to synthesize peer disclosures, stakeholder priorities and evolving regulatory requirements, surfacing the issues and metrics most likely to resonate with key audiences. We used these insights to shape both what the company disclosed and how it communicated, ensuring the final report was aligned with leading frameworks while also speaking directly to stakeholder expectations.

Across this work, the common thread is simple: we use AI to enhance analysis and strengthen outputs, allowing our teams to focus their expertise where it matters most. In a landscape defined by complexity and constant change, that shift matters.

While we are seeing immediate applications in sustainability, these capabilities extend well beyond a single function. We are already using this same approach to help organizations navigate complex communications, public affairs and reputation challenges across the enterprise.

Turning AI into Strategic Advantage

We are realistic about what AI can and cannot do. It is not a substitute for human judgment, contextual understanding or thoughtful leadership. But when paired with experienced practitioners, it can help organizations operate with greater clarity and confidence.

The future of sustainability will be shaped by organizations that know how to combine smart technology with strategic perspective.

And if AI can help teams bring greater analysis and deeper insights to real business challenges, that is a meaningful advantage
